UK Gala Ceremony - The 2007 Winners Unveiled

Awards reward fifty-five fine examples of training

This year’s 55 National Training Award winners have been celebrated at a gala ceremony at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel.

Sports presenter Sue Barker presented the winners, who came from across the UK, with their National Training Award trophies at the ceremony on 13 December.  The winners included:

  • Ernst & Young with Swan HR Solutions and MJC Associates for workshops that help trainees develop skills by helping charities solve real-life business issues
  • Bentley Motors for creating a new generation of managers through its own training academy
  • Train operator Southern for a coaching programme to transform its leadership style and organisational culture
  • The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich for transforming the role of its gallery assistants

Liz Chandler from Merseytravel was also awarded the Linda Ammon Award for an individual who has shown great dedication in providing opportunities for individuals as they seek to develop their careers and make their contribution to society.

Sue Barker said:  “I’d like to congratulate each National Training Award winner on their success.  Anyone can train, just as in sport, but the only way you are going to reap the rewards is if you're committed to developing new skills and putting them into practice. The winners have done just that and can feel very proud of what they have achieved.”

The National Training Awards celebrate organisations and individuals that achieve outstanding success through training.  They are run on behalf of the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills by UK Skills, a not-for-profit organisation championing vocational skills and learning for work.

Parliamentary Undersecretary for Skills, David Lammy MP, said: “Our economy and our workforce will see huge changes in the coming decades.  Skills are the key to meeting ambitions for people, businesses and the nation as a whole.  Training is the key to unlocking the skills potential of our greatest resource – our people.  I applaud these employers for making training their priority, and urge more of our companies to follow their example.”

UK Skills Chief Executive Simon Bartley said:  “My congratulations to this year’s winners.  Their success stories demonstrate how targeted training transforms companies, careers and communities.

“They join numerous businesses, individuals and organisations which have won National Training Awards over the past 21 years. As the awards ‘come of age’, skills are very firmly on the government’s agenda as it seeks to make the UK world class in skills by 2020.  I see the awards supporting this goal by continuing to celebrate and promote those who reap the rewards of investing in well-planned training.”
